Are you ready? Let's read!

Why is keyboard not working in Windows 10, 11?

It would seem not such a serious problem, but it all needs to be solved, since buying a new keyboard does not always solve the situation that has arisen.

Of course, when you see physical damage to the keyboard itself or its cable due to dropping, bumping, etc., then nothing can be done. Either repair or purchase of new equipment will help here, which is more rational.

However, the problem may be completely different:

  • Outdated drivers or their absence.
  • Incorrect keyboard connection (wrong USB port, damaged USB port, or the cable itself).
  • Your computer is set to Power Saving Mode, which locks your keyboard to save power.
  • Windows 10, 11 filter key feature has a bug that is causing text input issues on the login screen.
  • The latest Windows 10, 11 update may cause the keyboard to be disabled.

As you can see, you can fix many of the reasons yourself, so let's get started.

Turn on screen

In order to make it convenient to fix the keyboard not working on Windows 10, 11, you need to disable the on-screen keyboard.

In the Start menu, select the "Settings" section with the left mouse.

Then click on "Ease of Access." Here, find and click on the line Keyboard. Then activate the function "Use on-screen keyboard" and close the window. On the monitor screen, you will see a keyboard that can be controlled with a mouse.

Method 1. Use space bar

Now, you can start fixing the error with the simplest methods. So, the combination of hotkeys "Win + spacebar" can help you. Now, try working with a physical keyboard. In most cases, users will settle for this method as it shows its effectiveness.

If, nevertheless, this did not help you, method 2 is waiting for you.

Method 2. Is there any filter keys?

Often, the activated Windows 10, 11 filter key feature is the culprit. You can check this and disable it if necessary.

Open the Start menu and select Control Panel. Select the view mode - Category. Now, click on the Ease of Access heading. Now, in the Ease of Access Center, select "Change the way the keyboard works." Pay attention to the function "Enable filter keys" - it must be deactivated. Then confirm the changes and click on Ok.

Try to work on the keyboard; it should work.

Method 3. Keyboard troubleshooter

Windows 10, 11 has a dedicated keyboard troubleshooter.

It can be launched as follows: open the Start menu and click on the "Settings" section. Next, find "Fix keyboard," then click "Find and fix keyboard problems." Then follow the wizard to launch the troubleshooter and automatically fix any existing problems.

Method 4. Use device manager

You can also check if you have a power-saving mode, as it can turn off the keyboard.

To do this, press the hotkeys Windows + X and select "Device Manager" from the menu. Next, expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers menu and double-click on the USB drive that the keyboard is connected to. Then go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the box next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Then click "OK" and exit the window.

You can restart your computer and try to type something on the keyboard.

Keep your files under your control

If something goes wrong, or if your operating system contains a lot of errors, you can reinstall Windows and all problems will disappear at once. But before that, restore the necessary data or, even easier, create a disk image. All this can be done using the DiskInternals Uneraser app. It is the best file recovery software for different cases. You can recover any letters, documents, images, video and audio files, and much more at the same time or separately. The application provides secure data recovery, that is, the original files remain unchanged in all repositories without exception.

Here's how you can take advantage of Uneraser:

Install and open DiskInternals Uneraser and immediately activate the Recovery Wizard.

Next, select your preferred file formats or skip it (if it doesn't matter) and click Next.

Select a specific drive to scan.

When the scan starts, wait diligently for the end of the promotion.

The following preview feature is free. To use it, select the file by right-clicking it and choosing Preview in New Window.

The recovery itself occurs automatically, and saving and exporting files is possible immediately after purchasing a license on the site.
