What is the difference between SDHC and SDXC?

Here you will find out:

  • what SDHC and SDXC are
  • what the capacity and cost of the SDHC and SDXC cards are
  • how DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

What is SDHC?

SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) is a flash memory card based on the SDA (SD Association) 2.00 specification. SDA, in turn, allows SD cards to have higher capacities — up to 32 GB.

SDHC cards are quite common, often found in cameras and camcorders primarily due to their large capacity. That is, you do not need to think about which videos or photos to delete in order to free up space for your masterpieces.

What is SDXC?

SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) is the newest kind of memory card, first released in January 2009. SDXC, as defined in version 3.01 of the SD specification, supports capacities up to 2 TB. Since SDXC handles large amounts of data and files (up to 4 GB), the main file system supported is exFAT.

What is the capacity of SDHC and SDXC cards?

When choosing a storage device, pay attention first to storage capacity. SDHC and SDXC are both pretty good, but there is still a big difference between them:

  • SDHC cards’ capacity ranges from 4 GB to 32 GB; namely, cards can be 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB.
  • SDXC cards’ capacity is up to 2 TB.

The conclusion is clear: an SDXC card allows users of video and still cameras to store much longer high-definition files than an SDHC card.

What file systems do the SDHC and SDXC memory card use?

SDXC cards use the new exFAT file system, but this can be difficult to use: SDXC cards are not compatible with host devices that only accept an SD card or SDHC card.

SDHC cards use the more common and versatile FAT32 file system.

What is the cost of SDHC and SDXC memory cards?

Price can also be a major factor in choosing a particular storage medium. An SDXC card is much more expensive than an SDHC card. And if you compare the price of an SDHC card to an SDXC card with the same capacity, then the SDXC card will still cost you more.

So, if you care about more capacity and faster speed, go for an SDXC card. If you want something more affordable, then go for the SDHC card.

How to recover deleted files

If you somehow lost files from your memory card and want to get them back, then you are on the right track. Take your SDHC or SDXC card and insert it into the card reader on your computer. Now go to the DiskInternals website and download and install the Uneraser application, which is designed to recover files of any type. It is the safest and most successful way to get any type of file back from disk reformatting, accidental deletion, system crash, etc. Before purchasing a license for DiskInternals DiskInternals Uneraser, be sure to try out the free version (for even more confidence in the correctness of your choice). This program is equipped with a convenient and reliable Recovery Wizard; after scanning, you can view the found images (they will be marked with a red cross) absolutely for free. Follow the step-by-step instructions below, and the lost and damaged files will definitely be returned to you.

  • 1. Download DiskInternals Uneraser from the official site and run it on your computer. Make sure that the memory card is already connected to the computer.
  • 2. Select the main parameters that will be used to search for data: the disk on which they were and their format.
  • 3. Scan (deep scan or surface scan). it will take a while, so do something else for now.
  • 4. Preview is available to all users for free; after that, restoration will occur automatically.
  • 5. Data export will take place after purchasing a license; you will receive a license key that will allow you to save images to any storage device you like.
