RAID dynamic disk displayed as Foreign

Here you will find out:

  • what is "Foreign" status in dynamic disks
  • why does it happens
  • how DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

Why does the disk status show as “Foreign”?

If the dynamic disk no longer needs to build an array, it is reasonable to use it for other purposes; for example, storing backup copies, etc. In this case, users transfer this disk to their local computer with the hope that there will be no pitfalls. But instead, the notification “Disk0 Dynamic Foreign” and “Disk1 Dynamic Foreign” appear. There may be times when this disk was previously connected to the system and everything was in order; however, if all dynamic disks are damaged, all characteristics and settings are erased and the disk becomes a dynamic foreign disk.

Also, quite often when connecting a dynamic disk to the system, incompatibility with the OS occurs or the user uses a dual boot. You should not forget about this either.

Solution for dynamic foreign disk problems

Since the disk configuration does not match the system configuration, it is logical to eliminate this problem. For a disk to be added to your computer’s system configuration, you need to import it. This is done by right-clicking on the disk and selecting the appropriate item. This action will give you the opportunity to access the dynamic disk without any problems.

And what if there is nothing on the disk? You can try to recover data using DinkInternals applications, such as Partition Recovery or RAID Recovery. Recover your data today, and tomorrow you will no longer even remember this problem! These applications are not only professional but also universal, as they can restore all kinds of files (multimedia, documents, etc.).

DinkInternals Partition Recovery scans each partition of the disk and retrieves data from the deep sections of the disk. This feature of the application makes it possible to find seemingly long-lost files.

RAID Recovery automatically or manually checks the current state of the file system, the RAID array itself, the controller, and disks, and restores files where possible. The application supports the recovery of information from a mass of arrays: RAID 5, 50, 5EE, RAID 6, RAID 0, RAID 1, 0 + 1, 1 + 0, 1E, RAID 4, RAID 60, as well as from JBOD.

It’s also simple to manage the application:

Download RAID Recovery to your computer. After that, just install the utility and open the welcome window. Do not be scared about what to do next. Click on the Recovery Wizard icon and follow its instructions.

It will give you the opportunity to choose an array to restore and the scanning method (fast or deep).

For the most part, all stages of the process will be automatic.

As soon as you get the search results, all found files will be available for reading for free.

After viewing the files, you are unlikely to have any questions about the quality of the results, which are guaranteed.

The application offers an export function with the purchase of a license. The Export Wizard will help you complete this process.

Remember: you need to save your data before formatting, as RAID is parsed, and disks are defined as part of a dynamic disk.

Is the import of dynamic foreign disks harmful for data?

This procedure essentially does not affect the information stored on the disk in any way; all files must retain their integrity and be accessible. The exception is on Windows XP Home: in order for this system to accept a disk, you need to get rid of any information and convert the dynamic disk to a basic one. To do this, you must first delete all disk volumes individually, and then use the right mouse to select “Change to base disk”.

It should be noted that if you import foreign disks (namely two such disks), Windows can automatically recreate RAID 0. So this will be a kind of recreation of RAID.
