The Difference Between VMware FT and VMware HA

Here you will find out:

  • what is VMware High Availability(HA) and Fault Tolerance(FT)
  • what is the difference VMware FT vs VMware HA
  • how DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

About VMware High Availability(HA) and Fault Tolerance(FT)

VMware has many configurations to provide more efficient virtual machines, including High Availability (HA) and Fault Tolerance (FT). Here are the most important aspects of these configurations.

  • Neither HA nor FT will provide foolproof security. Of course, by using FT or HA, your virtual machine will be more secure, but there may still be problems with applications, the OS, etc. At the same time, both HA and FT are resource-intensive, meaning resources may not be available during an active crash for active virtual machines.
  • Checking the host for failures may delay the initiation of a failover (usually with standard settings, the scan time is 2 minutes, only after which the virtual machine will restart). However, this will avoid unnecessary VMware HA rebooting.
  • HA works thus: in the event of a failure, you can restart the virtual machine; or, failing that, transfer the virtual machine to another server. The virtual machine will, however, be inaccessible during this process.
  • FT works differently: an additional virtual machine is created (a copy of the first). In the event of a failure, switching to the backup virtual machine occurs instantly. There are no delays, so a reboot is not required. The damaged virtual machine then restarts and synchronizes to restore fault tolerance. However, if you have software problems, a backup virtual machine will not help you.

Summary: VMware FT vs VMware HA

Summing up, both configurations significantly increase the Fault Tolerance of a virtual machine, but risks will still be present. There may still be problems with OS setup, network operations, etc. Therefore, you still need to always be prepared for unforeseen problems.

FT is notable for the absence of downtime, while HA requires time to reboot. In addition, HA works on each cluster, while FT works on each virtual machine.

VMFS Recovery: restore files from a VMware virtual machine

If you have a virtual machine, then you must have DiskInternals VMFS Recovery on your desktop. This application can automatically check the current state of VMware VMFS data stores, volumes, disks, RAID (if used), as well as the VMFS structure, where possible. The result is an instant recovery of VMware data, VMFS recovery, and even reading and restoring VMDK files. Information is recovered from damaged or serviceable disks in VMFS format. Pay attention to the recovery process: it has several features, but this does not affect the result of the difficulty in working with the application.

In order to start data recovery, download and install DiskInternals VMFS Recovery on your computer.

As soon as you open the application, configure an SSH connection if you need to. Then open your local drive or SSH.

Scanning will begin. After scanning, find the files you need.

Mount the VMDK file and open it.

Next, preview files for free.

Buying a license to export data is the final step. After that, you just have to enjoy the unsurpassed results!
