Difference between VMware vMotion vs HA

Here you will find out:

  • about VMware vMotion and VMware HA
  • what are their differences
  • when DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

About VMware vMotion

The vMotion device migrates a VM from one server to another, while all actions occur without a pause or delay; i.e., almost instantly. In addition, this mechanism uses a non-clustered way of working and only works in an active environment. Storage vMotion operations are performed inside a single ESXi host or on storage using VAAI.

There are no operations at the network level through the control network. VMware ESXi Server supports up to four simultaneous Storage VMotion migrations. In addition, migration is suitable for technical support.

About VMware HA

This device protects users from spontaneous VM failures and ensures uninterrupted operation. This is possible thanks to instant switching from one cluster to another reserved cluster of the entire contents of the machine. In other words, VMware HA is ESXi high availability technology.

It is clear that this technology uses only clusters and in order to create an HA cluster, we need all virtual machines of this cluster to be stored in a common data storage. And VMware HA uses only dead environments in its work.

VMware HA vs vMotion

If an accident occurs with any host within the same cluster, then your best solution is VMware HA. vMotion technology promotes migration from one host to another, and it doesn’t matter which OS each host has. VMware HA and vMotion are two interwoven processes; VMware HA is dependent on vMotion.

The technology of the migration process is designed so that there is no downtime and the user does not even notice these actions.

How to perform VMDK recovery from a failed VMware VM

DiskInternals VMFS Recovery is a professional tool for recovering VMware data, recovering VMFS file systems, and reading and restoring VMDK files. It is designed for IT professionals and is also widely used by forensic experts. Any restrictions and prohibitions on Windows can be bypassed by this application and do not affect its operation. It also supports Unicode file names and multi-level folders.

The application recovers VMDK files stored on disks formatted using VMware ESX/ESXi Server; this is a fairly common feature among clients. Use the Recovery Wizard in case you need assistance through the process. All found folders, files before restoration and export can be previewed for integrity. The export function to local or remote locations will become available after purchasing a license for DiskInternals VMFS Recovery.

Good luck!
