About the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error

You likely have heard about the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), which refers to Windows errors that prevent PC users from booting their computers; instead, they get stuck with a blue screen. In particular, the PFN_LIST blue screen appears when Windows is unable to read a Page Frame Number (PFN). PFN is an algorithm utilized by hard drives to establish the location of files saved in the disk.

Method 1: Uninstall antivirus

Most of the time, the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error is caused due to your antivirus settings. Hence, when you see this Windows error message, you should uninstall the antivirus software you're using. Some PC users who have faced this error have said that this trick worked for them.

Steps:

  • Launch Windows Settings page by pressing Windows Key + I.
  • Open the "Update & Security" section and navigate to the "Troubleshoot" tab.
  • Expand the "Blue Screen" tab and click on the "Run the Troubleshooter" button.
  • Follow the prompt instructions to complete the process.

Method 3: Use the SFC scan

SFC is a built-in utility in Windows that scans for errors and fixes them automatically. It is available on Windows 7, 8, and 10.

Steps:

  • Launch "Command Prompt (Admin)" – Press Windows Key + X and choose the option from the context menu.
  • Type the following command into the Command Prompt interface: SFC/scannow.
  • Hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

Method 4: Use DISM

Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is also a built-in Windows utility that automatically fixes most Windows issues.

Steps:

  • Run Command Prompt as an Admin, following the steps explained in the previous method.
  • Type the following command: DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth.
  • Hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

If you're using installation media (Windows ISO), enter the command below instead of the one above: DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth/source:WIM:X:SourcesInstall.wim:1/LimitAccess

Note: replace the "X" after "WIM:" with the drive letter of where Windows was previously installed.

Restart the computer afterwards.
