Guide: change administrator on Windows 10

How to change administrator on Windows 10

In this article you will find out:

  • how to change administrator on Windows 10
  • how to protect your data

Are you ready? Let's read!

Windows 10 has several accounts:

  • standard user account;
  • administrator account.

As for the administrator account, it provides full control over the system, including providing access to all files on your device.

The standard user account allows you to work with applications and change settings that do not affect other user accounts. However, standard users cannot install new applications and run processes that require elevated privileges. To do this, you need administrator rights.

You can independently change user accounts to standard or administrator accounts, install software and hardware, and more.

However, be aware that if you forget your password or your computer is locked, you will not be able to make any changes to the device.

If you need to change the administrator in Windows 10, for example, if you are selling a device to someone else, want to add someone else as an administrator, or become a standard user, follow the instructions in this article.

via settings

To change the Windows 10 administrator using settings, do the following:

  • Click the Start button and select Settings and then click Accounts.
  • Next, click Family and other users and select a user account and click Change account type.
  • Now select the type of administrator account and click OK.
  • For all changes to take effect, restart your computer.

via Control Panel

When using this method, click Start and select Control Panel. Next, go to the User Accounts section and click the account you want to change. Now select Change account type and select the required user account. Save your changes and be sure to restart your computer for the new rights to take effect.

via User Accounts

You can set an account from the administrator "User Accounts" or using the netplwiz command.

To do this, type netplwiz in the search bar and click the desired result to open user accounts. Next, click the required account and select "Properties".

Select the Group Membership tab and select the account you want to change. In the "Other Membership" section, you can also select different user groups. Click the Apply button and select OK and then reboot the device to apply the changes and use the new administrator account.

via PowerShell

With the PowerShell command-line shell, system administrators can automate the creation of new users, passwords, and more. So right-click on Start and select Windows PowerShell (administrator). Then enter the command: add-LocalGroupMember -Group "Administrators" -Member "ACCOUNT-NAME" and your account will be successfully changed.

via Command Prompt

In the search bar, enter CMD, select Command Prompt and click on Run as administrator, enter the command:

net localgroup "ACCOUNTNAME" / add. Press Enter.

After restarting the computer, the account will boot with administrator privileges the next time the user logs on to the device.
