Are you ready? Let's read!
What is Secure Boot?
Secure Boot is an option for booting a computer with Windows 8 or later versions with UEFI firmware. This feature protects your computer from unauthorized devices.
When you disable this boot option, you can boot the computer from an external device (USB or CD), dual-boot (for example, Windows with Ubuntu Linux), boot Windows using Windows password recovery tools, or start previous versions of Windows.
When is it worth it to disable Secure Boot?
You can turn off Secure Boot at any time. This can come in handy in the following cases:
- Installing an older version of Windows
- Starting recovery from a boot disk
- Installing another operating system, such as MacOS or Linux
- Updating firmware or other PC maintenance procedures
You also can re-activate Secure Boot whenever you need to do so.
How to disable Secure Boot quickly
The method for disabling Secure Boot may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer of your computer. However, the course of action for disabling Secure Boot is almost the same for all computers.
First, enter the UEFI setup. Press the Power button and, once you see the manufacturer's logo on the screen (e.g., Lenovo, HP, Samsung, ASUS, Acer, Gateway), press the special key button. Depending on the brand of computer, this key is either at the top or bottom of the screen.
You should also remember hotkeys: F2 will start the BIOS setup, F12 will present the boot selection menu, etc.
You should now be in the “Configuration” section. Select the “Secure Boot” option (if you do not see such an option, then try looking for it in the "Boot", "Security" or "Authentication" sections). In the new window, set the value to “Disabled” and save the changes. To do this, press the F10 key.
Now restart your computer and take the necessary actions that Safe Boot prevented you from performing.
