A client recently encountered a failing fixed disk on a Win 98 machine. He quickly “burned” six years of legal documents to a CD using Nero. The following day he “burned” his son’s schoolwork folder to the same CD. Later that day the fixed disk failed completely. I installed a new drive, reinstalled Win 98 and returned the machine. Later that day the client called, extremely upset. It seems that the only content of the CD was his son’s schoolwork folder. All of his six years of legal documents were gone, both from the double-burned CD and from the failed fixed disk. After a Google search, I downloaded and installed a program, “CD&DVD Recovery” from DiskInternals Research (WWW.DISKINTERNALS.COM). The free downloaded program recovered 40 of the legal documents, all files 64K or smaller. It then informed me that it could recover the remaining files, all files larger than 64K, if I would just pay for it. I did, $ 29.95.
