Enabling SSH on a Virtual Server

There are two different methods of enabling SSH connectivity on a virtual server.

Method 1: via vSphere Client

You can enable SSH on a ESX (ESXi) 5 server via vSphere Client.

  • 1. First start the vSphere Client

  • 2. Select the ESXi host in the configuration tab

  • 3. Select Security Profile

  • 4. Click on Properties in the upper right corner. A popup window listing all services on your ESXi 5.0 hosts will appear. Select “SSH” and press the Options button.
  • 5. Now you can start the services and set its startup options

  • 6. Press OK.

Method 2: via ESX (ESXi) server

Enable SSH on ESXi 5 via console.

  • Press F2 on the console (<F2> Customize System/View Logs)

  • Enter your root password and go enter "Troubleshooting Options"

  • Select "Enable SSH"

You have successfully enabled SSH connectivity.
